As soon as your child turns three, you are delighted that you can now stop worrying about the terrible twos. In reality, these temper tantrums can actually follow a child into adolescence and it is not a coincidence that your toddler is getting upset after having an afternoon snack. A meltdown is never fun and can wreak havoc on a parent’s mental health. Obviously, you get upset when you see your child throwing a tantrum and you don’t know how to control them. Most parents are not aware that it is possible for them to prevent a child tantrum by paying close attention to the foods they are eating.

During the day, a child may consume a lot of things in the form of snacks. Yes, sometimes you make them at home, but there are times when they buy a snack from the shop. Just because it is not fast food doesn’t mean it is healthy. There are a variety of food additives that can be harmful to your child. In fact, they are responsible for lack of concentration and hyperactivity thereby causing a temper tantrum. For instance, food coloring used in numerous items can cause mood swings in children. These dyes can be found in cereals, candies, and sweets like Skittles and similar items that are popular amongst children.

Kids become hyperactive, suffer from loss of focus and they also take a toll on their cognitive function. Likewise, sodium benzoate, which is a preservative found in sodas, soft drinks, and juices, can also have the same effects. This means that it also contributes to a meltdown. Last, but not the least, sugar is also notorious for causing a plethora of health problems. It is found in a wide array of products like yogurt, ketchup, cereals, tomato sauce and other condiments. Artificial sugar is also used in different products and this can make kids hyperactive and moody leading to strange reactions and tantrums.

Thus, watching what your child eats can be a great way of reducing temper tantrums. Parents should make healthy eating a priority as there are some highly nutritious foods that not only boost cognitive function but also help in controlling their moods and reactions. Some of the foods that should be part of every kid’s diet include complex carbohydrates as well as those that are high in fiber. These foods are not digested quickly, which means they will keep their blood sugar in check thereby controlling mood swings.


Fish, omega-3 fatty acids and flaxseed are some other items that also need to go into your child’s diet. Fish like salmon can boost mental health and Omega-3 are useful for keeping moods in check. Other foods that can be handy for maintaining a healthy brain and regulate mood include avocado, broccoli, and kidney beans. Healthy eating involves making sure your child is eating these nutritional superfoods and consuming processed foods and those containing dyes and preservatives in a limited quantity. In this way, meltdowns and tantrums can be kept in check.
